We moved into 2 Shawbury Road in 1984/85 purchasing it from The Salvation Army. The Sangat and Committee fought hard to obtain the building as another buyer wished to turn it into a Nightclub.
In 1999 we underwent a major £100,000 refurbishment to include a second floor to house our Darbar Sahib and to have a large Langar Hall on the Ground Floor. All the money was raised by contributions from the Sangat
History of Sikhi
Guru Nanak, (born April 15, 1469, Rai Bhoi di Talvandi [now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan], near Lahore, India—died 1539, Kartarpur, Punjab), Indian spiritual teacher who was the first Guru of Sikhi, a monotheistic religion that combines Hindu and Muslim influences. His teachings, expressed through devotional hymns, many of which still survive, stressed salvation from rebirth through meditation on the divine name.
In 1538, Guru Nanak chose Lehna, his disciple, as a successor to the Guruship rather than one of his sons. Bhai Lehna was named Guru Angad and became the successor of Guru Nanak. Bhai Lehna was born in the village of Harike in Ferozepur district in Punjab, on 31 March 1504. He was the son of a small trader named Pheru.
Guru Amar Das became the third Sikh guru in 1552 at the age of 73. Goindwal became an important centre for Sikhi during the Guruship of Guru Amar Das. He continued to preach the principle of equality for women, the prohibition of Sati and the practise of Langar. In 1567, Emperor Akbar sat with the ordinary and poor people of Punjab to have Langar.
Sri Guru Ram Das Ji (Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮ ਦਾਸ) (Friday 9 October, 1534 – Saturday 16 September, 1581) was the fourth of the Ten Gurus of Sikhi. Guru Ji was born in the year of 1534 in the city of Lahore to parents Bhai Hari Das ji and Mata Anup Devi Ji, with the birth name Jetha. After being orphaned at the age of 7, Bhai Jetha grew up living with his maternal grandmother.
